Ladies and Gentlemen,

Assalamualaikum and a very good afternoon to you all!

Let me at the outset express my deep thanks and appreciation to YBhg. Professor Dato’ Dr. Hamdan and the Institute of Public Relations, Malaysia, for the kind invitation extended to me to address this distinguished audience this afternoon. I had accepted it partly due to the persuasiveness of the President of IPRM who had called on me, accompanied by my old friend, Haji Aznan Mat Piah, and partly due to the relevance of the subject to my professional calling as a diplomat, especially as the head of the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations of Malaysia, the training arm of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which trains our diplomats as well as those from other countries.

Semua yang mahukan citra yang positif lagi kekal perlu memiliki kemahiran perhubungan awam yang tinggi.  Ini termasuk para pendidik.  Sebenarnya, para pendidik lebih-lebih lagi memerlukan imej yang positif bagi menjadi model terbaik untuk para pelajar mereka serta ahli-ahli masyarakat meyakini mereka.  Pihak masyarakat, khasnya ibu bapa pun mengharapkan bahawa para pendidik memberi teladan yang terbaik.  Maka, sesiapa yang bercita-cita untuk menjadi pendidik dan pemimpin yang cermelang wajib mahir dan mengamalkan perhubungan awam yang terbaik.

Who is the public relations person? Considering that their job covers a broad spectrum of businesses and causes, it is difficult to establish a set of personal attributes for the people who wear the public relations hat. Indeed, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to identify the PR practitioner (PRO) as a “Jack/Jill of all trades”, to be politically correct.

     Kepesatan pembangunan dan penggunaan media massa ketika ini sememangnya telah membantu memudahkan segala urusan harian manusia yang termasuk  dalam lapangan perniagaan tidak kira sama ada ianya berskala besar ataupun kecil.

 

     Secara tidak langsung ia telah mengubah institusi-institusi yang terdapat di dalam masyarakat selaras dengan perkembangan semasa. Khasnya, dalam bidang komunikasi media yang menyaksikan kemunculan pesat teknologi terbaru dalam bidang ini.

Perhubungan awam  sektor awam lazimnya merujuk kepada kegiatan-kegiatan perhubungan awam yang dibuat oleh pihak kerajaan dan setiap agensinya pada semua peringkat.  Kini, cabaran perhubungan awam di dalam kerajaan adalah kian mencabar.  Malah boleh dikatakan bukan sahaja lebih mencabar daripada sektor-sektor lain tetapi kian diperlukan.
